‘Green’ advocates say clean energy a job-creating engine

From an article by Larry Avila in The Northwestern, Oshkosh:

Ask Jim Funk if there’s a future in green energy, he’ll likely say “yes.”

With millions of gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico and the country in need of new industries to create jobs, advocates of renewable and alternative energy sources think they have momentum on their side. Proponents are pointing to the disaster and high unemployment rates to say now is the time for the government to pass legislation to further development of clean energy.

Funk, who in 2002 formed Energize LLC, a Winneconne-based company that installs solar power systems, was among several participants during a telephone press conference Friday urging Wisconsin Sens. Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold to act on clean energy and climate legislation.

“I feel the public really wants clean energy,” Funk said. “We have economic challenges today and other countries are facing similar economic and environmental issues … it’s critical something happens now because we are in competition for (green) jobs.”

Google Eaarth Shows Our Hellish 4C Future if Republicans Filibuster 2010 Climate Bill

If the Republican party does succeed in filibustering landmark climate legislation that Majority Leader Senator Reid brings to a vote this month, we will end the world as we have known it. This Earth will become what Bill McKibben calls Eaarth, a unknown new planet, with temperature and other changes never before experienced by humans. The last time the planet was that warm was millions of years before humans evolved.

What will that new world look like? Where will it be safer to pass down property to your grandchildren? Which regions will still have water? Google Earth has just come out with this new overlay to show how different regions will fare under the “business as usual” scenario.

The KML layer launched today by Climate change minister Greg Barker. The impact of a global temperature rise of 4C shows the effects of a 4 C rise (about 7 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of this century.

The 4C scenario will be the result with no action by the US  (Senate switchboard:  (202) 224 3121) because this November in Cancun, the rest of the the world will respond to that inaction. (more…)

Climate Awareness Bike Trip Includes Redwood Forests, Beautiful Cycling, and Beer
Working in the climate movement, it’s easy to get discouraged. Almost every month, a new climate bill seems to get introduced, only to be seriously watered up, and then voted down. Often times it feels like we’ve made no progress (perhaps because we haven’t followed this advice). Add to that the recent litany of recent environmental disasters, and it all adds up to a bad case of ‘climate fatigue.’

For the third year, I’ll be taking part in the Brita Climate Ride–a 5-day, 300-mile bicycle tour and ‘climate conference on wheels,’ and I’m writing this column to try to get you to join me.

The ride will take place September 21-25, starting in Fortuna, California (near Eureka), and finishing in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco at New Belgium Brewery’s Tour de Fat celebration where more than 6,000 bike lovers will greet us. Riders sign up and then raise at least $2400, which benefits climate advocacy programs at Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Green America, and 1Sky. One of the great things about the event is that campsites, luggage transfer, road support, meals, bike mechanics, and bike guides are all included–all I (or you) have to do is pedal along some of the most spectacular roads in California, including the legendary Highway 1 along the Pacific Ocean.

Climate Ride California is a new event. For the past two years, I’ve participated in the popular East Coast version where we biked from New York City to Washington D.C. along country roads most people don’t even know are there (see video at the end of this psot). In the process I made new friends and probably had some the most fun I’ve ever had during climate advocacy. But the reason I’m doing the ride again is because I want inspiration.

On the Brita Climate Ride, I’ve met countless people who have inspired me. I’ve shared meals with environmentalists who have their own television show, cycled with activists who helped found 350.org, and chatted with ordinary individuals who had never biked more than 20 miles in a day, but were now riding over 300 miles in five days. I even met people such as ocean rower Roz Savage (who will be on the ride again this year), who rowed a boat solo across both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The people on the ride are a vibrant, diverse community who gather each year to learn about and advance solutions.

You can register for the ride here. Below is a video of last year’s ride. Hope to see you out on the California coast in September!

New UK FIT Spurring PV Market Growth

New UK FIT Spurring PV Market Growth
Cornwall, the region in the far southwestern corner of England that is associated for many with images of cream teas, fishing boats and childhood seaside holidays, now appears set to lead the UK into new territory: solar farming. According to Ray Noble of the Renewable Energy Association, more than 40 planning applications are about to be submitted for ground-mounted PV systems up to 5 MW in size in this county alone. And the new feed-in tariff – introduced in April this year – will ensure that they generate not only power, but a steady stream of income.

Clean Tech’s Mid-Year Report: Many Battles Ahead
In any given year, some days stand out as touchstones for an industry, and for clean tech. Tuesday, June 29 was one of them. As the seventh annual Renewable Energy Finance Forum (REFF)-Wall Street opened at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in midtown Manhattan, Wall Street itself was beginning one of its worst days of the year. The Dow Jones average plunged 268 points, renewing fears that the U.S. economic recovery, in the words of Bank of America Merrill Lynch managing director Parker Weil, is still “perilous and weak.”
