J.R. Ewing Promoting Solar Energy!

J.R. Ewing Promoting Solar Energy!

J.R. Ewing

It has been fun discussing who knows J.R. Ewing and who doesn’t with some of my blogging friends (a discussion which got tipped off by engadget’s story, “J.R. Ewing’s back to promote solar power, no one under 30 knows why this is so funny“). And, although I am of the under 30 crowd and thought “J.R. Ewing? Who’s that?” when I first saw mention of this news, now that I know who the guy is, it seems like too good a story to pass up.

Brownfields Reclaimed for Clean Energy and New Green Jobs

us epa steps up efforts to reclaim brownfields for generating renewable energyIt’s a sustainable cure for the industrial hangover: take those old abandoned factories, former mines and dump sites, and use them as sites for solar, wind, hydropower, and other clean energy.  The EPA has powered up a formerly patchwork reclamation effort into a program called Re-Powering America’s Lands that is also designed to bring new green jobs into communities distressed by factory closings.

We’ve written about the link between green jobs and brownfields reclamation before at CleanTechnica, and Environmental Leader has a nice article up on the topic that mentions some of the individual projects.  It’s worth taking a look at the details to see how brownfields reclamation is unlocking a great potential for economic growth that in many cases has been languishing for decades.

Areva Boosts Solar Supersteam Parameters in Bakersfield
Areva Solar is mounting a fourth 2.5-MW solar steam generator at its Kimberlina solar thermal plant in Bakersfield, CA, increasing both pressure and temperature in a modular demonstration of its V1.3+ Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR) technology. The modular installation is a precursor to a 44-MW configuration to be installed at the Kogan Creek coal-fired generator near Dalby, in Queensland, Australia, in a $35 million refurbishment.

Random acts of green
The green movement also has its share of home-grown heroes who inspire many people. What inspires me more is witnessing what would appear to be random acts of green carried out by ordinary folks – the unsung environmental heroes.

European Investment Bank and PSA Peugeot Citroën Sign €200M Loan Agreement for the Development of Plug-In Hybrids

The European Investment Bank and PSA Peugeot Citroën signed a €200-million (US$259-million) loan agreement to finance the carmaker’s program to develop plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Representing a total outlay of €400 million (US$518 million), the plug-in hybrid program aims to develop multi-purpose vehicles that combine the advantages of a diesel engine on the highway and those of an electric motor for city driving. Five hundred PSA Peugeot Citroën employees are working on the project, which will be developed entirely in France, at the Velizy Technical Centre.

The loan was granted under the European Clean Transport Facility (ECTF) financing program, one of the EIB’s measures for stimulating the European economy. The ECTF aims to significantly reduce automotive CO2 emissions through R&D and innovation and encourage the production of cleaner, more fuel-efficient cars, trucks and other vehicles.

Since December 2008, the EIB has granted €8.6 billion in loans to carmakers and automotive equipment manufacturers. Of that figure, €6.7 million was granted under the ECTF financing programme, including €600 million to PSA Peugeot Citroën.

The European Investment Bank was created by the Treaty of Rome in 1958 as the European Union’s long-term lending bank. The Bank’s objective is to contribute towards the integration, balanced development and economic and social cohesion of the EU Member States. The EIB raises funds on the capital markets, which it lends on favorable terms to projects furthering EU policy objectives. The EIB continuously adapts its activity to developments in EU policies.
