Why We Need Electric Car Subsidies

Photo via the Resilient Earth
This year will see the debut of some of the most hotly anticipated electric cars ever designed for the mass market — notably, the Chevy Volt and the Nisson Leaf. And right on cue, the complaints and criticisms about EVs have begun to fly. The cars, which will at first be produced in smaller quantities and with new technologies, will be relatively expensive — $41K for the Volt and $33K for the Leaf, though a …

How Can Technology Reduce Global Shipping’s Fuel Consumption?

Car transport ship, photo: Rennett Stowe via flickr.
If we’re going to start this great transition off of oil we really need to start thinking hard about how we’re going to move ourselves and our goods around the globe. Part of that is thinking conceptually about it–how to change our habits and usage patterns for long-distance travel. The other part is h…

GM to Boost Volt PHEV Production Capacity by 50% in 2012

Photo: GM
From 30,000 to 45,000 Units
Thanks to strong interest by the public, GM has decided to boost production of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid by 50% in 2012. This means that instead of making 30,000, they’ll make 45,000 at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant. The company is probably hoping that it can improve the economics of the Volt by reaching economies of scale faster than initially planned, and it no doubt feels Nissan breathing down its neck with its cheaper LEAF el…

Islands of Garbage Filling China’s Three Gorges Dam

Image via China Daily
Torrential rain in China has caused extreme flooding, affecting at least 134 million people in 28 provinces. But many more could be impacted due to another major issue caused by the rain. Massive islands of trash are threatening the Three Gorges Dam area, with some patches so thick people can actually walk on it. Nearly 3,000 tons of garbage is being collected daily from the dam, but it might prove to be too much for limited equipment and workers. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Weekday Vegetarian: An Artful Eggplant and Red Pepper Stack for a Hot Day

Photo: Emma Alter
The eggplant that I have been growing in my garden has been extremely successful this year. The flowers are beautiful, which is always nice, and each plant is providing a large number of vegetables. I’m girding my loins for the onslaught of eggplant ready for harvesting. I have at least six coming in the next day or two, maybe closer to ten. Some vegetables you can keep around the kitchen for a while, but eggplant tends to get bitter, so you should cook it as soon as you can…. Read the full story on TreeHugger
