Spring Cleaning – Green Style
Posted by EcoFriendlyApr 3
If the thought of green cleaning is making you groan think of it this way; now is the perfect time to green your home and cleaning routine. It’s not going to make the cleaning part more fun, but at least you’re going in knowing that this year you’re not just cleaning but making positive changes.

Clean without chemicals: Now is the perfect time to go through all your cleaners. Toss anything icky (tip – if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, it’s likely not so swell). Replace your cleaners with healthier greener options or get really motivated and make your own green cleaners. Don’t forget to audit your cleaning tools while you’re at it.
Freshen up your walls with out toxic junk: Good low or no-VOC paint choices that will spruce up your home and still let you breathe clean include…
- Aglaia Natural Paints
- Yolo Paint
- Anna Sova
- Paint collection from Green Fusion Design
- The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Co
Open the windows: Did you know that fresh air is one of the best natural cleaners around? Easy and true. Forget costly and chemical laden air fresheners and just open the windows. Other non-toxic ways to clean your in-home air include…
- Grow some plants.
- Take your shoes off before coming inside.
- Avoid dry cleaning – most dry cleaned goods release chemicals into your air. If you must dry clean choose a greener option.
- Replace your mattresses and bedding. Most conventional non-organic bedding can release toxic junk into your air and dreams. Especially bad villains are PBDEs (you’ll know them as flame retardants) which pollute both the planet and our bodies.
Buy sustainable home products: If part of your spring cleaning list includes redecorating make sure the items you buy are smart green choices. Good products to look for can include…
- Furniture made with sustainable wood.
- Organic fabrics and other textiles.
- Lead-free dishes.
- Decor items for home and garden made with recycled items.
- Fair Trade items.
- Art made with sustainable methods and materials.
Are you spring cleaning this year? Any green spring cleaning plans?
